Purification of Black Cumin Oil Components: CDTI NIGEPUR Project
The limited availability of Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) seed oils containing sufficiently high concentrations of Thymoquinone for use in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications represents an important unmet need within the industry.
Although some Black Cumin oils with varying Thymoquinone contents are currently available on the market, none of them reach the concentrations required for these specific applications. The industry requires high Thymoquinone concentrations, ranging from 50% to 95%, to enable appropriate formulation and microencapsulation depending on the intended application.
In response to this need, the main objective of this project is to develop an efficient method for obtaining Black Cumin seed oil fractions with significantly higher concentrations of Thymoquinone. This will enable their use in a wide range of nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications, meeting market demand and providing innovative solutions for both consumers and industry.
Thymoquinone is well known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer properties.
